Story
Final Fantasy XVI takes place in the world of Valisthea, a land blessed with glittering mountains of crystal called Mothercrystals that provide aether to the realms around them. For generations, people have flocked to these beacons to take advantage of their blessing, using the aether to conjure magicks that let them live lives of comfort. Great powers have grown up around each Mothercrystal, and an uneasy peace has long reigned between them. But now, that peace is faltering, as a spreading malady called the Blight threatens to destroy their dominion.
The story follows Clive Rosfield, firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria. Though initially expected to inherit the flame of the Phoenix Eikon, that power instead manifested in his younger brother Joshua. Sworn to protect his brother as his Shield, Clive's life is forever changed when a mysterious dark Eikon, Ifrit, unleashes a bloody tragedy. Now on a path of revenge, Clive becomes embroiled in the conflicts between the nations of Valisthea and their Dominants—special individuals who can call upon the power of the Eikons, this world's version of the traditional Final Fantasy summons.
Gameplay
Final Fantasy XVI represents a significant departure from traditional turn-based combat, delivering a high-octane action RPG experience more akin to Devil May Cry than previous entries in the series. Combat is fast-paced and fluid, with Clive able to wield multiple Eikonic abilities gained from Dominants he encounters. These powers can be freely mixed and matched, creating a dynamic and customizable fighting style.
