Story
Set after the events of Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom sees Link and Princess Zelda discovering an ancient evil sealed beneath Hyrule Castle. When this malevolent force awakens, it shatters the land, sending islands into the sky and opening chasms to a mysterious underground realm. With Zelda missing and Hyrule once again in peril, Link must harness new powers granted by a damaged but powerful arm to restore peace to the kingdom.
The narrative unfolds across three distinct layers of the world: the Surface of Hyrule, which players will recognize from the previous game but now altered by calamity; the Sky Islands, floating landmasses that hold ancient secrets and technology; and the Depths, a dark underground realm with its own ecosystem and mysteries. As Link traverses these realms, he uncovers the history of an ancient civilization and the truth behind the tears that give the kingdom its name.
Gameplay
Tears of the Kingdom builds upon the revolutionary open-world design of Breath of the Wild while introducing transformative new abilities that completely change how players interact with the world. The most significant of these abilities is Ultrahand, which allows Link to combine objects and create complex structures like vehicles, machines, and weapons.
- Ultrahand: Attach objects together to build anything from simple rafts to complex flying machines.
- Fuse: Combine weapons and objects to create unique, powerful tools with special properties.
- Recall: Reverse time for specific objects, creating new pathways or solving puzzles.
- Ascend: Pass through solid surfaces above Link, allowing for vertical exploration.
The game world is vastly expanded with the addition of the Sky Islands and the Depths, creating a three-layered environment to explore. Each area features unique challenges, enemies, and resources. The familiar systems of cooking, crafting, and combat return with new dimensions added through the Fuse ability, which allows Link to create weapons with diverse effects by combining them with other objects.
Graphics & Sound
Tears of the Kingdom builds on the distinctive art style of its predecessor while pushing the Nintendo Switch to its limits with improved draw distances, lighting effects, and environmental detail. The three distinct realms each have their own visual identity: the familiar yet changed Surface, the ethereal and ancient Sky Islands bathed in light, and the hauntingly beautiful Depths illuminated by glowing fungi and mysterious artifacts.
